Fall mountain engagement photos on the Blue Ridge Parkway, NC

There is no better place around here to experience a fall engagement than the blue ridge parkway in North Carolina.  I especially love the parkway because of the large variation in elevation – I can usually find a location that has gorgeous fall colors anytime during the month of October, and into November.  This is because Fall color moves from higher to lower elevations as the season progresses.  Elizabeth and Noah wanted their session in the mountains during peak color, and since it was early in the season, I decided on a high elevation part of the parkway.  It did not disappoint!  I am no stranger to Fall colors, especially from my days as a landscape photographer…but this session had so many striking reds and yellows in the tress that my mouth actually dropped open when I arrived.  It was unlike anything else I’ve seen.

One of the drawbacks to a mountain session is the planning and timing.  A lot goes into selecting the right location, and the weather up there is extremely temperamental.  The specific area we were in was the Graveyard Fields area, which is an area known for it’s particularly volatile weather.  Storms can roll in within a half hour and be gone as quick as they appear.  Or the forecast could call for intense storms all day, only to have them clear up unexpectedly to reveal a beautiful sunny day.  If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for dramatic lighting.  Well this session definitely features some dramatic lighting.  The storms rolling in created a smooth soft diffused lighting in the valleys, while creating the exact opposite at the peaks.  This was truly a memorable engagement session.  Not to mention Elizabeth and Noah absolutely loved my darker photography, so I got to try some things I wouldn’t normally get to try.  All in all, I had a great time with everything: The dramatic weather, beautiful Fall colors, the ability to experiment, and the perfect couple.  Who could ask for anything more?

Please enjoy a few of my select favorites below!
